To be honest, the fruit was more of a thing of literature and legend to me until a few of my extended family members moved to Montana. Soon after, I was treated to packages of huckleberry coffee, huckleberry chocolate, and more that came in the mail every holiday, and I wasn't mad about it. Since 1970, Huckleberry House has welcomed over 25,000 youth through the doors of the Teen Crisis Shelter, and has served thousands more through our Outreach, Transitional Living, and Counseling programs.

The teens and families we welcome into our programs are dealing with serious problems. Issues such as abuse, violence, addiction, and homelessness. In nearly every instance, the youth and families we serve genuinely want to find a way out of their current situation and get to a better place in life. Through our Crisis Shelter, family and individual counseling, community outreach, and independent living skills training, we help them take the first steps in a better direction. She is now a student at Columbus State and works two jobs.
At the Huck House Crisis Shelter, our doors are always open. If you’re dealing with fighting, abuse, violence, or any other situation that makes it difficult or unsafe for you to stay at home, our Crisis Shelter provides a safe alternative to the streets. When you come to Huckleberry House, you’ll need to contact a parent or guardian within 24 hours of getting here. Many of the young people in our program have children of their own. We help you build skills for caring for and enjoying your children, and our program provides resources, including an onsite playroom, where your children can have fun learning and playing.
The Huckleberry House Crisis Shelter is not a detention center, a jail, or a scared straight program. Last Thursday, April 25, approximately 200 Huckleberry Youth Programs supporters gathered at The Chapel @thechapelsf for Huckleberry`s Hearts in Harmony benefit. Housing Program
Currently, a total of 15 apartments are set aside specifically for survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, or other crime. Today the network has 136 sites including fire stations, libraries, White Castle and Donatos restaurants, and community centers. Huckleberry House offers continuous 24-hour crisis intervention and resolution services and emergency shelter to high-need youth between the ages of 12 and 17. Huckleberry House may house 18-year-olds who are enrolled in high school or GED program. If you don’t have a safe place to call home and you’re between the ages of 17 and 21, we can help. We can provide access to furnished apartment along with support and services that can help you maintain a home of your own.

We will print you out a COTA route and walk you through the steps of using COTA, if you have never used it before. Your guardian can also make transportation arrangements for you, such as with a family member or family friend. With your guardian’s permission, you can attend school and go to work while you’re staying at Huckleberry House. Sometimes we ask you to stay back from school on your first full day at Huckleberry House so a counselor can meet with you, but we will give you a school excuse. Whether you’ve slept out before or considering sleeping out for your first time, we hope you will join us in solidarity with youth who experience homelessness.
Like other berries, huckleberries are a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants, helping to strengthen your immune system and fight off diseases. And of course, vitamin C is important for the production of collagen, helping your skin to look softer and less wrinkled. They're also high in iron, helping to prevent deficiencies that can lead to anemia. Huckleberries are one of the grizzly bear's favorite foods, and they're willing to travel great distances to get them. So be aware of your surroundings when going huckleberry picking, because you may be in a bear's favorite patch.
Our staff works with you on things like how to make a budget, how to grocery shop and cook healthy meals, and how to keep your home clean and safe. We provide counseling for working through any emotional difficulties and challenges you may face. We can also help you work toward your employment and educational goals, and you are expected to attend school and/or maintain a job while you’re in the program. At the end of the program, you will have a solid foundation for building the kind of life you want and for succeeding on your own.
Young people and families come to Huck House for many reasons. Join Sleep Out and help us shine a light on youth homelessness in central Ohio. They're small and round and range in color from red to blue and even black. They have noticeably larger seeds than blueberries, which can be somewhat bitter in taste.
